New figures show house prices are reaching record highs.
The Retail Estate Institute has released its sale data figures for March which show a jump in the volume of sales, and a rise in the median price of houses.
Sales volumes were up 25% for the month, the best result the market has reported for nearly five years.
All regions saw growth with Canterbury sales more than doubling compared to a year ago following the region’s devastating earthquake.
The national median, or mid-point, of house prices now sits at $370,000, up by 1.4% on last year.
Fierce competition in the Auckland market has seen the median price rise there by 5.4% on last year to $495,000.
Retail Estate Institute Chief Executive Helen O’Sullivan says it means first home buyers will struggle to tap into the Auckland market, but it is good news for people looking to sell their home.
She says there is more confidence among sellers that they will get the price they are wanting.
